Stephen King, one of the most important and best American writers, continued to receive acknowledgement of his work on extremely visible and important stages. On September 10, 2015 President Obama presented Mr. King with a National Medal in the Arts.

I am both a beginning novelist and an experienced educator, with a Ph.D. in English Literature. I am not saying that to be egoist; rather, I want to show that there are those in the academic world who consider Mr. King to be an extraordinary writer.
Mr. King has, for many years, demonstrated his talent for telling deeply powerful stories with moving themes and unforgettable characters. Some of his work stands as among the best novels written. Hearts In Atlantis and The Stand are, in my opinion, masterpieces of literature.

Now, in addition to his 2003 lifetime achievement award from the National Book Awards, he has earned another important accolade. I hope that those in the academic world who have simply dismissed his writing without bothering to read it will now realize that he is a master writer.

Scott Timberg reports, “‘One of the most popular and prolific writers of our time, Mr. King combines his remarkable storytelling with his sharp analysis of human nature,’ President Obama read. ‘For decades, his works of horror, suspense, science fiction, and fantasy have terrified and delighted audiences around the world'” (Salon.com).
Congratulations to the great writer! And thank you to Stephen King for all the writing you have given to us!

The Stand’s one of my favorites of Stephen King! I have seen the made for TV of The Stand but the book’s way better! Glad for him. Almost got killed when he got run over. Glad he’s OK. The driver that hit him killed himself?

I agree with you about the book and movie; the book is much better! And I am not sure about the driver.

Stephen King is absolutely inspiring, not only as a writer but he, himself, as a person. Brilliant, he deserves every token that represents his mastery of writing.

Like him or not, Mr. King is a phenomenon. Sooner or later, I believe Literary Critics will allow themselves to acknowledge at least some of his work, and like you, I find The Stand particularly deserving. With all of the changes happening in the field of Literary Criticism I have high hopes that he will achieve the recognition he has earned, I just don’t know if academia can move fast enough to reward him in his lifetime…a shame, but not unusual for anyone who labors in the arts…even Horror!

I think academia might, just might, be in the beginning stages of recognizing his worth.

It is about time this very popular writer was recognised, for too long the critics and the establishment turned their noses up at him because he wrote “Horror”, if they’d only bothered to read his books they would have seen what a master story-teller he is, realised he creates incredibly detailed, complex and believable characters and that his prose is rich and nuanced…even if the subject matter was more often than not a haunted car, vampires or whatever else. I must admit to being disappointed by *some* of his more recent work but Stephen King is undeniably one of the greats. The Stand, It, Pet Sematary, The Shawshank Redemption, Apt Pupil, and his collection of short stories are particular favourites – they’ve been read and re-read to the point that the books are pretty much worn out 🙂

Hello, and thank you for your astute response! I do agree that the establishment of academic critics needs to embrace him as one of our best writers.
