‘Miracles Are Happening’: Photos of the Tireless Women of Standing Rock

DEC 7 2016

Thanks to the efforts of Standing Rock protesters, the controversial Dakota Access Pipeline has been diverted. Photographer Celine Guiout went to Standing Rock to shoot the women who made it happen.

Over the weekend, the US Army Corps of Engineers finally delivered some good news to the thousands of protesters camped out at the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation: Construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline would be halted.

The proposed pipeline would have carried crude oil underneath Lake Oahe, a dammed-up part of Missouri River and the main water source for the reservation. The Sioux tribe has repeatedly expressed concerns that the pipeline could lead to contamination of their water supply and threaten its water and treaty rights.

After months of the stand-off involving protesters (who call themselves…

My book signing at the ‘Berg Bookshop at Muhlenberg College in Allentown, PA was successful and a great deal of fun! The bookshop did a wonderful job of setting up for the event, including some delicious refreshments.  So, I want to send a thank you to everyone who helped!

It was held from noon to 2 P.M., and there was a great deal of traffic in the store.  I had a wonderful time speaking with a variety of people, ranging from students and staff whom I know to students and parents whom I do not know.  I answered questions about my novel and enjoyed speaking about books with the visitors.

I also sold 7 copies and signed them!

And I want to give a special thank you to my wonderful wife Liz, who attended and took the photographs!

Favorite Christmas Movies: Part 1

Since we are now well into December, I wanted to start this series again, and this post from last year is a good way to begin!

There are so many aspects of this holiday season that are wonderful to me: getting together with loved ones, friends and family alike; the spirit of giving that I hope continues to grow; celebrations; the holiday music; and the memories of happy times.  Among the favorite memories I have are a few specific Christmas movies.

The movie I will talk about today is Scrooge with Albert Finney as the star; he does a magnificent job in his performance as the miserly and misanthropic loan-shark. This musical version of A Christmas Carol is one of the finest filmic adaptations of the classic Christmas Eve ghost story and morality tale.  This film follows  the story closely with Scrooge being visited by the ghosts of Christmas Past, of Christmas Present, and of Christmas Future. Among the movies best songs are Scrooge singing “I Hate People” which clearly shows his despicable and greedy…

Quotations On Hope and Idealism

Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope, and crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring, those ripples build a current that can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance.

Black Friday: Keeping Spirituality Separate From Materialism

Standard

This post deals with an important issue to consider during this time of year.

2B or Not 2B

Today I’d like to talk about a topic that has been bothering me since the Black Friday commercials first aired on our televisions. Itaffectsusallasartists, writers, and individual thinkers. Over the past few days, I’ve realized two things.

One, it’s extremely difficulttokeep a humble heart during thistimeof year: thetimeofgifts, sales, expensiveobjects, andcorruptbargains. Howdoesanartist, awriter, keephimself groundedduringsomuchchaos? Throughout atimeofstrongjealousyandshallow competition, how does one keep his spirituality?

Two, the conflict between spirituality and materialism eventually becomes an intense internal battle in all of us. Unfortunately, in many people, materialism triumphs over spirituality. WhenIwalkedintothemall this morningwithmysister, Ilegitimatelyfelt

Remembering The Pearl Harbor Attack 75 Years Ago – #WWII #PearlHarbor

Standard

This is an excellent post on a very important day to remember!

The Tony Burgess Blog

1024px-Pearl_harbour.png U.S. Navy Battleships – USS West Virginia, USS Tennessee and US Arizona at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941

(From Wikipedia) On Sunday morning, December 7, 1941, the Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service attacked Naval Station Pearl Harbor in Honolulu, Hawaii, without warning and without a declaration of war, killing 2,403 American non-combatants, and injuring 1,178 others. The attack sank two U.S. Navy battleships and damaged five others. It also damaged three cruisers, three destroyers, and one minelayer. Aircraft losses were 188 destroyed and 159 damaged.

Remembering the events of this day 75 years ago as the United States was attacked and entered World War II. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt called this “a day that will live in infamy” and it was truly a moment that changed the course of history and the war. Remembering the veterans who were lost on this day.

Last Night’s Book Reading of Maledicus: The Investigative Paranormal Society Book I

Standard

bookreadingtayroasted

I had the good fortune of having a book reading at the wonderful Taylor Roasted CoffeeHouse in Northampton, PA last night.  The weather was not conducive to a large turnout because a nasty layer of sleet was falling, and driving was somewhat hazardous.  A few friends attended, and the event became a cozy discussion of my book and of writing in general.

As I always do when at this establishment, I had a very large cup of black coffee, and I consider the Taylor Roasted CoffeeHouse to have the best java in the entire Lehigh Valley, PA, if not everywhere!  They are presently working on redesigning their website, and I hope orders will be available for shipping anywhere. If that happens, I will highly recommend their coffee to coffee lovers everywhere!
