Synopsis: Narrated by Death, The Book Thief tells a story of Liesel Meminger, a nine year old German girl living outside of Munich, Germany, shortly before World War II and the destruction and beauty of life during this era. After the death of her younger brother, she is introduced to the world of book thievery after finding a copy of The Gravedigger’s Handbook that was left behind by accident near her brother’s gravesite; this begins her love affair with books and words. When she is given up by mother to live with her foster parents, Hans and Rosa Hubermann in the small town of Molching in 1939, she is exposed to the horrors of the Nazi regime and conditions of World War II. With help from her foster father she learns to read and embarks on a journey of self-discovery.
