I want to wish everyone a happy, safe, joyous, and successful New Year! I wish peace, safety, and comfort to those who need it in the world. I wish courage to those who will face difficult challenges in their lives.I wish love and friendship to all.

I wish writers the discipline to keep writing. Remember, do not worry about the quality of the first draft; just get it down! Happy Writing!

“The” Quote 0f 2019 – 50 years later

Here is a wonderful and important quotation from Neil Armstrong, but to us by Jennie, the excellent teacher!

A Teacher's Reflections

Fifty years ago the first astronauts landed on the moon.  This event brought to the world the victory of science, hopes and dreams – and proof that anything can be achieved with hard work, bravery and spirit.

In recognition of this historic and important event, I want to share Neil Armstrong’s quote.  It is the most important quotation this year, just as it was fifty years ago:

“With courage, imagination, and the will to explore – nothing is impossible.”
-Neil Armstrong-

Whether it is landing on the moon, or finding your way, or taking a risk – Neil Armstrong nailed it.

Here is an excellent post from Lara Trace Hentz!

Lara Trace Hentz

“Grandmothering was the initial step toward making us who we are,” says senior author Kristen Hawkes, an anthropologist at the University of Utah. In 1997 Hawkes proposed the “grandmother hypothesis,” a theory that explains menopause by citing the under-appreciated evolutionary value of grandmothering.  Hawkes says that grandmothering helped us to develop “a whole array of social capacities that are then the foundation for the evolution of other distinctly human traits, including pair bonding, bigger brains, learning new skills and our tendency for cooperation.”

As the year is approaching its end, I have been thinking about what I am thankful for. One such thing that I am deeply grateful for are my readers on this blog. You are a disparate group, but you are also unfailingly intelligent, kind, and civil. I have also made several friendships here with people who live far away, and I am grateful for those connections.

To all my blog followers:

Thank you!

I recently asked about favorite holiday movies, and today, I thought I would move the discussion to a different art form–music, specifically holiday songs.  For me, I think of two in particular that are among my favorites: one is “Snoopy’s Christmas,” which I have loved since I was a child; another is “Little Drummer Boy,” which speaks to the importance of the poor and what they can contribute to the world.

I ask all of you: what is your favorite holiday song or songs?

The Real Meaning of Christmas

Standard

Here is a wonderful post on Christmas from Jennie, the extraordinary teacher!

A Teacher's Reflections

Our astronaut / veteran / Navy Captain / pen-pal has been ill and hospitalized.  I had to tell the children.  Life can throw you a bunch of curves, and learning how handle adversity is a life lesson.  That’s why I had to tell the children.

Immediately the children wanted to send him a card.  They were worried about him.  They didn’t want him to miss Christmas.  So we made him a big card.  Well, the children made it.  Actually they planned and designed the whole thing.

They told me the words to write on the cover.  Then, instead of drawing pictures on the card, children made individual pictures, cut them out, and glued them to the card.

If you look carefully, there are moons and stars, a Christmas tree, and even outer space. They know Jon well.

The best part was including photos of the children being astronauts in our…

I want to wish everyone a Happy Yule and Blessed Solstice–this wish goes to everyone regardless of religious beliefs or otherwise! This is a season of generosity, kindness, and forgiveness. Please try to spread kindness wherever you go.

Also, I am one of the unusual people who loves Winter–I always feel at my best physically and mentally at this time of year. I become more energetic, and I always feel like a child with delight when it snows.

Again–Have a Happy Yule and Blessed Solstice!
