Hello to all the writers out there!
I hope everyone is staying safe and healthy.
I wanted to ask how your writing is progressing. Are you working on a first draft or editing or both? I have been getting about 1000 words a day on my current first draft; I have about 37,000 now. I hope to be finished with that initial draft at the end of the month or early next month. Then it will be a month of revisions!
Now, this will be a bit of shameless self-promotion, but if you are having difficulty finishing your first draft, then please check out my book–Get The Draft Done! in which I offer strategies for finishing your first draft.
So, I ask all of you: how is your writing progressing?

Well done, Charles, 1 000 words a day is about my average too. I finished my second draft on Monday (well the first draft was 35 000 words and now it is 105 000 words) and will start editing it tomorrow.

I got a little over 5000 words done on the novel Iâm rewriting, but the podcast and other things kept me from getting much writing done this week.

My writing is coming along, first draft on one novel and I should be doing another editing pass on a previous novel, but I dropped it for now because I was getting mixed up switching back and forth!

Still not as much as I would like it to be, unfortunately.

It sounds like you’ve been keeping busy. Very cool. As my blog “…Spring a Leak” indicates I’ve been mostly busy with that.
When I saw your leading picture of the typewriter, I immediately thought of a who dunnit, where the incriminating evidence was found in the typewriter.

I’m on edit number 2 and having sent it to a fabulous author of a similar genre, been told that I need to look at the structure and ditch the prologue! This is going to mean a bit of a rethink as to the start of the book. I’ve been googling like mad and see that yes, prologues are generally disliked as they can be a cheat’s way of starting a book. There’s clearly quite a knack to all this, which I have yet to not only discover, but to put into practice. Any advice welcome! Katie

Hi Katie, I have heard the same thing about prologues, but I have seen many excellent books with them. My suggestion is to trust your own instincts.

Yes, I have too so it’s a difficult one. Thanks for the advice … I suspect you’re right.

I’m in the middle of rewriting, so I’m on the second draft. Best of luck with your manuscript, Charles:))

Hello, Charles! Kudos on your WIP! I’ve been focusing on poetry, with random notes and some systematic research for a new novel. Thanks for asking!

Hello, and I am happy that it helped! Please continue to write. Don’t let others or you stop your writing.

I’ve seen more progress in watching paint dry than I do in my writing. I think I’m too distracted with current events right now. 🤪

Hi Karina, perhaps, you should pick a time to turn off all media, relax, and just read books–then try writing.

My writing’s going very well. I’m still on redrafting my first novel and have recently tried a new redrafting exercise – writing my novel from memory as a short story. It was a lot of work (involving writing over 7000 words in one day) but it was definitely worth it. It gave me a much clearer view of what needed fixing than when I was redrafting chapter by chapter.

Thank you! That is a very interesting revision idea!

Thats a really good question, Charles. Sorry, i am not writing novels, i am investigating the truth, writing pleadings, and requests for injunctions of witness hearings. 😉 Its progressing very good. But dont ask the counterparty. Lol Best wishes, Michael
