Trump as Dictator

Standard

I try to avoid political posts in this blog, but I cannot remain silent. Our country and our democracy are under attack from the highest level of government–the President.

Today, Donald Trump used tear gas and military force to dispel peaceful protestors in Washington, DC, so he could have a photo-op holding a Bible. Please remember that the First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States of America guarantees the right of citizens to protest peacefully.

“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”

He then held up the Bible in front of a church to justify his actions, and that is the highest level of hypocrisy.  All Americans who love this country, who admire our democracy, and who want to preserve freedom must oppose this would be dictator. Republicans, Democrats, and Independents must oppose him.

Please make no mistake–I am not condoning violence or rioting, not at all, but Trump is using this time to project strength, but the strength he projects is that which is reminiscent of Mussolini and Hitler, not of Reagan, FDR, JFK or President Bush.

Remember that freedom and democracy are fragile and precious, and they must not be sacrificed to the altar of a projection of power. America needs and deserves better.

  1. This is indeed a moral, ethical, and Constitutional test for us all… Yet in truth, were we not made a better country by the very same questions posed by the Civil War? And do we not stand to gain the same resolve in this correction of our moral compass? All we need now is a Lincoln…

  2. it was an incredibly horrible reality-showed strongman show of force, produced in slow motion and with music, at the expense of people and hiding behind an upside down bible, uninvited at a church that stands for social justice. sickening.

  3. It’s so important that people see his posturing for what it is, and his choice of words. Urging the police and military to “dominate” the protesters is, in essence, condoning the actions of the cops who killed George Floyd and so many other acts of racial injustice being carried out across the country. Thank you for writing this post. I will be sharing it.

  4. Well said. I just read something in this same vein on Barb Taub’s blog. If so many of us feel this way, how is it he is still here and doing well. It makes me concerned about the quality of people in this country. Who on earth thinks he’s a good idea?? I’m beside myself.

This is so sad… I do agree with you dear Charles, you said right. But how the world got these dictators… We have too, you know. 21st century and human world should deserve more beautiful things, events, minds,…. This is actually history that’s been written there but we can’t say that this is not our matters… In everywhere there is same problem, social justice!!!! I hope as soon as we establish all values again… Blessing and Happiness to you all. Thank you, Love, nia

  6. It makes me wonder how he can possibly think the photo op of standing in front of the church with the bible after tear gassing peaceful protesters is going to endear people to him. Is he that dense? Must be the beginnings of onset of old-age dementia. Gotta be.
