At The Lehigh University Author Reception!

Standard

Chuck1

I am pleased to say that my book, The Investigative Paranormal Society Cookbook , was among many other texts that were featured in the Friends of the Lehigh University Library Author Reception at the Linderman Library of Lehigh University in Bethlehem, PA.

This event was lovely, and it was wonderful for the authors to receive recognition from the University. The soiree was held on the ground floor of the rotunda in Linderman Library. I featured the library in an earlier blogpost, and I have to say that it is one of the most beautiful libraries I have ever seen.

I also want to thank the extraordinary librarians who put this event together! You did a fantastic job, and I am very grateful.

National Library Week!

What is one of the places in most communities where people can go to find information, use computers, talk to other people, and most importantly, read books for free? Your public library is a wonderful and important resource.

I have loved libraries since I was a child; I remember going to the branch library in my town with my mother and siblings. I thought it was such a large and magical place. This library was actually a fairly small building, but the magic inside was enormous, and that was the magic of books and reading! That small, local branch library begin my life long love of libraries.

Some of the institutions are magnificent city libraries, and some are small, but they are all important. Whether in a metropolis like New York City or a tiny town of 500, these treasure troves of knowledge and books all serve the people who use them.

New Series: Libraries and Book Stores of the Lehigh Valley, PA

As a resident of the Lehigh Valley in Pennsylvania, with Allentown, Bethlehem, and Easton being the largest and most well known cities in the area, I feel that awe are blessed with an abundance of libraries and bookstores in this area.

There has been much talk about readership slowing down, but I do not think that is true. I have heard statistics at the Writer’s Digest Conference this summer that approximately one million books are published every year. This number itself can vary widely depending on the source; for example, the website Worldometers says over 1,800,000 have been published this year.

books-768426_960_720

Additionally, the number of independent bookstores continues to rise. According to Statista, the numbers have increased from 1,651 in 2009 to 2,321 in 2017. These numbers indicate clearly a desire for books to be read.  Certainly publishing continues to  change, but readership exists.

In the Lehigh Valley, PA, an abundance of libraries and bookstores serve the population of just over 700,000 people.

This post is an introduction to the series; in following posts, I will focus on a particular library or bookstore. I hope you enjoy them.

August 9 is National Book Lovers Day, and that makes it one of the best days of the year! This is a time to celebrate the people who read and love books–bibliophiles!  I am assuming if you are reading this post, that you are also a book lover.

No matter the place from which you get your books, whether it be libraries, bookstores, or online, the having and reading of books is one of the greatest pleasures of life! Reading can be done almost anywhere–in a park, in a home, in a cubicle, on a bus or train, or on the beach (and these are certainly not the limits of possible reading locales).  Wherever you might be while reading, you can be transported into many other worlds, through the connection of the writer’s words to the reader’s imagination. That is one of the most wonderful relationships possible!

I have to thank my mother for helping to instill this love of reading into my soul. I have been reading since I was 3, and it is a crucial part of my being. It is also one of the most important abilities for children not only to develop but also and, perhaps more importantly, to love. If a child has the love of reading, it should stay with him or her forever.

“If this nation is to be wise as well as strong, if we are to achieve our destiny, then we need more new ideas for more wise men reading more good books in more public libraries. These libraries should be open to all—except the censor. We must know all the facts and hear all the alternatives and listen to all the criticisms.
